

At the end of 2022, the total number of CALEA clients was approximately 1300, and growing. The accreditation process is completely voluntary and considered to be the Gold Standard in public safety. The department received its most recent award in 2022. The department has retained its accredited status and began receiving the Meritorious Accredited award in 2006. This prestigious honor was awarded to the department after an intensive review of departmental policies and practices, which ensured that the agency was in compliance with nearly 500 standards promulgated by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA ®).

The Hamilton Police Department received its initial accreditation award on March 24th, 1990 when it became the 139th Internationally Accredited Law Enforcement Agency. In addition to these duties, the Operations Bureau Captain oversees the coordination of the internal affairs function and the deployment of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team. The Operations Bureau includes the day-to-day operations of the Patrol Division, Traffic Division, and the Detective Division. The Support Services Lieutenant ensures that all department property and equipment is properly maintained and accounted for. The Support Services Bureau includes the Central Records, Court Services, Training, Public Affairs, and Neighborhood Policing sections. The Hamilton Police Department is divided into two bureaus with different and distinct responsibilities: the Support Services Bureau and the Operations Bureau. The Hamilton Police Department consists of 115 full-time sworn men and women, 13 civilian personnel, and 8 Corrections Officers. CALEA accreditation affirms the professional status of Law Enforcement agencies worldwide. The department serves a population of over 62,000 residents and is committed to providing the community with “Exceptional Police Service for a Better Hamilton.” The City of Hamilton Police Department has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since 1990, when the department became the 139th internationally accredited law enforcement agency.
